59th British National Ploughing Championships

On Saturday October 10th Brad and I went to the Ploughing (plowing) National Championships. I know some of you are thinking...what the??? But it was really fun and we got to see some neat stuff. We watched horses pull ploughs through the fields and we also saw them use old steam engines to plough. It was all very different but very neat to see and be a part of. While we were there we made a new friend who invited us to his farm for a visit. He is about 80 and has been farming for all his life. For those of you that know us don't worry we asked him about 100 questions so we know quite a bit about the history of farming with a steam engine. It began in about 1860 and continued through WWII. They use 2 steam engines with a pully system pulling a plough from one steam engine to another. The steam engines were just a demonstration, no judging. The horses on the other hand were pulling ploughs and were being judged. They were being judged on a lot of different things but the main ones being how straight the lines were and how well "turned" the soil was. The horses were so beautiful and it was incredible to watch. Don't worry we also had drinks and bought souvenirs. Brad got a fleece that has the "Society of Ploughmen" logo and then he had it embroidered with "GET PLOUGHED". The Brits did not get our humor but we thought it was funny. Cheers!
